CCTV Buyer's Guide 2026: What Actually Matters

CCTV Buyer's Guide 2026

Most first-time buyers over-index on megapixels. Here's what actually matters when spec'ing surveillance for a business.

1. Sensor size, not resolution A 2MP camera on a 1/1.8" sensor beats a 5MP on a 1/3" sensor in low light. Ask for the sensor size in every quote.

2. Storage math At 4MP · H.265 · 15fps · 24×7, one camera consumes ~40 GB/day. Multiply by camera count, then by retention days.

3. ONVIF compatibility If you may switch brands in year 2, insist on ONVIF Profile S/T cameras. Locks you out otherwise.

4. PoE budget A 24-port switch rated for 250W total PoE will not run 24 heaters. Reserve 30% headroom.

5. The install matters more than the box Aiming, weatherproofing, and cable routing determine whether the footage is usable at 3 AM.
